Mesabi Nugget Phase II EIS:
providing critical environmental assessment for mining

In accordance with National and State environmental regulations (NEPA & MEPA), proposed mining of a former mine site was reviewed for permit-related issues: wetland impacts, water pollution discharges, water appropriations, air pollutant discharges (including greenhouse gases (GHG)), & rare species takings. In the St. Louis River headwaters, extensive hydrologic evaluation was required to assess effects on aquatic resources, drinking water supplies, and wetlands. Within the 1857 tribal trust lands treaty area, environmental review included diplomatic relations with prominent tribal authorities. New CEQ guidance established the basis for more substantive NEPA coverage of climate change and mitigation and monitoring.
