Big Brothers Big Sisters - Sustainable Site Design

Big Brothers Big Sisters - Sustainable Site Design

EOR designed the site improvements for the new headquarters of Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities in North Minneapolis. The design includes the addition of green infrastructure (GI) and stormwater management features such as rain gardens that incorporate native plantings.

The new features and decorative drainage elements greatly improve the site functionality and aesthetics, especially the entryway and adjacent parking area, from what was once a nearly 100% developed, urban, semi- industrial location. The project leveraged a grant from the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization to create an environmental education tool that program coordinators will be able to use to engage visiting children about the importance of stormwater management and the site’s direct connection to the Mississippi River.

Client Benefits

  • Improved water quality of site’s stormwater runoff which drains to the nearby Mississippi River
  • Increased public awareness/environmental education of the importance of GI and Stormwater Management
  • Added greenspace contributes pollinator and wildlife habitat
  • Project improves climate resiliency of the local community
