EIS for New Mining Facilities
New Mine & Related Mining Facilities - Scoping EIS
EOR recently completed an EIS on this controversial proposed new copper/nickel mine as it's processing facilities are sited along Birch Lake, which is just upstream of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in northern MN. EOR and its large, expert-team of subconsultants, evaluated the mine plans and completed an extensive analysis of mining alternatives that primarily focusing on reviewing the effects of mining sulfide deposits within the sensitive wetlands and watershed of the BWCAW.
EOR also facilitated the EIS scoping meetings with DNR staff, MPCA staff, and Native American tribal representatives. Specific insights related to cultural values, focusing on tribal values, were incorporated in the EIS. EOR was in process of writing the Draft Scoping Decision Document when the project was stopped because the federal government withdrew its mineral leases.
